Effective, Efficient and Safe though Innovation
The Triloge Organizer was created by an ICU nurse who had worked previously as an ER nurse for many years in a fast-paced, unpredictable, and often chaotic environment in the Emergency Setting. After witnessing first-hand, the danger of the visual cluttering effects of the numerous IV tubings entwined together in the ICU, which can quickly reduce the ICU nurse’s accuracy and speed in identifying each IV tubing during emergencies like Code Blue, a much-needed solution to address this problem was recognized. Due to the complexity of the ICU patient’s condition, multiple IV drugs need to be given simultaneously, leading to more IV tubing lines near each other, causing IV-line entanglement (IV Spaghetti Syndrome).
Additionally, tangled IV lines cause an average delay of 12.4 minutes during patient mobilization, where lines must be cleared beforehand. Younger population is also affected, such as children, where the risk of Line Entanglement is about 1/3 in the ICU.
The long-term impact of harmful events in the healthcare setting(psychological, social/behavioral, financial, and physical) could take a decade or more after the event for the patient and their families. Similarly, adverse events in health care also impact health care professionals, who become the Second Victims of medical error.
The current practice is based on the idea that a single IV infusion may also apply to the setup of multiple IV infusions. Nurses typically do not receive specific guidance on how to set up multiple IV infusions, so methods can vary, which may not be optimal from a safety perspective. Tracing each IV tubing is necessary before making connections or administering IV infusions. Findings suggest that Line labels and Organizers improve infusion safety by enhancing visual communication along the pathway (e.g., infusion contents, access port) and organization (e.g., align bags to pumps, minimize tangles)
