When Organizing IV Lines means Saving Lives...

Effective, Efficient and Safe though Innovation

What is Triloge?

The Triloge Organizer was created by an ICU nurse who had worked previously as an ER nurse for many years in a fast-paced, unpredictable, and often chaotic environment in the Emergency Setting. After witnessing first-hand, the danger of the visual cluttering effects of the numerous IV tubings entwined together in the ICU, which can quickly reduce the ICU nurse’s accuracy and speed in identifying each IV tubing during emergencies like Code Blue, a much-needed solution to address this problem was recognized. Due to the complexity of the ICU patient’s condition, multiple IV drugs need to be given simultaneously, leading to more IV tubing lines near each other, causing IV-line entanglement (IV Spaghetti Syndrome).

What is IV Spaghetti Syndrome?

Most critically ill patients in various ICU settings will require multiple intravenous lines with more than 6 IV tubing lines. Each additional IV medication increases the likelihood of an Adverse Drug Event (ADE) by 3%.These IV tubings could get easily entangled, causing visual disarray or clutter among clinicians, leading to a phenomenon called, “IV Spaghetti Syndrome”.

What are the Negative Impacts of IV Spaghetti Syndrome?

Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority of IV Infusion Incident Report 2004 to 2013

907 events of intravenous (IV) line errors. – infusion mix-up errors were the most common error (71%), involved high alert drugs such as Heparin and insulin

Federal Drug Association Report 2024

Example of Medical Device Misconnections – an event in which a pneumatic tubing line from a non-invasive vascular diagnostic system was incorrectly connected to an IV catheter

Infusion Mix-Up as One of the Top 20 Health Technology Hazards in 2015

Cost of Financial Burden

ICU IV-related ADEs average cost $6,647 per patient Ave 4.8 Days Extended Stay in the ICU.3 Preventable ADE Expense is $3.5 Billion/year. Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Cost for Wrongful Deaths ($500,000 to $5million)

Other Negative Effects

Additionally, tangled IV lines cause an average delay of 12.4 minutes during patient mobilization, where lines must be cleared beforehand. Younger population is also affected, such as children, where the risk of Line Entanglement is about 1/3 in the ICU.

The long-term impact of harmful events in the healthcare setting(psychological, social/behavioral, financial, and physical) could take a decade or more after the event for the patient and their families. Similarly, adverse events in health care also impact health care professionals, who become the Second Victims of medical error.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT PRACTICE?

The current practice is based on the idea that a single IV infusion may also apply to the setup of multiple IV infusions. Nurses typically do not receive specific guidance on how to set up multiple IV infusions, so methods can vary, which may not be optimal from a safety perspective. Tracing each IV tubing is necessary before making connections or administering IV infusions. Findings suggest that Line labels and Organizers improve infusion safety by enhancing visual communication along the pathway (e.g., infusion contents, access port) and organization (e.g., align bags to pumps, minimize tangles)

Why Choose a Multi-IV Line Organizer than a Light IV Tubing Device?

A multi-IV tubing organizer offers more versatility than the Light IV tubing technology, which can help identify the Main or Safe line during IV management. Aside from IV Drug management, an ICU nurse would still be involved in other patient care tasks such as patient mobilization and patient transportation, which are essential activities in the ICU setting; a multi-IV-line organizer is very much indispensable for each intervention to be done successfully and safely.
